The 70 replaced the Forerunner 55 and finally drops the MIP screen for AMOLED. At $249 it carries Training Readiness, Training Status, HRV Status, Race Predictor, and wrist-based running power — metrics that used to start several hundred dollars higher up the range. Everything it gives up is hardware: no barometric altimeter, so elevation comes from GPS and there is no floors-climbed; no compass, no gyroscope, no Garmin Pay, no music. In exchange it has the longest battery in the entire Forerunner line at 13 days and 23 hours of GPS.
Strengths
- Longest battery in the Forerunner range — 13 days, 23 hours GPS
- Training Readiness and HRV Status at $249
- First watch at this tier with an AMOLED display
Tradeoffs
- No barometric altimeter — elevation is GPS-derived
- No Garmin Pay and no music storage
- No compass or gyroscope
