The base Fenix 9 folds what used to be Fenix 8 options into the standard model. Sapphire and a titanium bezel come on every size, storage doubles to 64GB, and Garmin rates the AMOLED at twice the Fenix 8’s brightness. The core kit carries over: ECG, skin temperature, an LED flashlight, speaker and mic, a 40m dive rating, topo maps, and Training Readiness with no subscription. Battery holds at 16 days on the 47mm and stretches to 29 on the 51mm. Two caveats. Garmin renamed its GPS modes and now runs SatIQ in all of them, so the 37-hour figure is not directly comparable with the Fenix 8’s 47. And most of the new sport software is coming to the Fenix 8 too. At Garmin’s own prices both cost $999, so buy the newer one.
