Understanding Your Cycle

The typical menstrual cycle runs 28 days, but anywhere from 21 to 35 days is considered normal. Ovulation — the release of an egg from the ovary — happens about 14 days before your next period, regardless of cycle length. That's an important distinction: in a 32-day cycle, ovulation is around day 18, not day 14.

The Four Phases

  • Menstrual (days 1-5): uterine lining sheds; period bleeding occurs
  • Follicular (days 1-13 ish): estrogen rises, egg matures in a follicle
  • Ovulation (day ~14): LH surge triggers egg release
  • Luteal (days 15-28): progesterone rises, then drops if no pregnancy

Why the Fertile Window Is ~6 Days

Sperm can survive 3-5 days inside the reproductive tract. The egg itself only lives 12-24 hours after ovulation. That's why the fertile window starts 5 days before ovulation and ends 1 day after — sperm that entered earlier may still be waiting when ovulation happens.

More Accurate Methods

  • Basal body temperature (BBT): small temperature rise after ovulation confirms it
  • Cervical mucus observation: becomes clear and stretchy near ovulation
  • Ovulation predictor kits (OPKs): detect the LH surge 24-36 hours before ovulation
  • Fertility tracking apps that combine these inputs provide the best predictions
